Half of Gen Z workers (50%) say they would prefer work social events that do not involve alcohol, according to new research from Diamond Interiors, highlighting a growing cultural shift in how younger employees choose to socialize at work.
The survey, conducted with YouGov, found an even split in attitudes, with the remaining 50% saying they do not prefer alcohol-free events. The findings point to a clear divide in expectations, suggesting that traditional workplace socializing norms may no longer appeal to a large portion of the workforce.
A shift in workplace culture
For decades, after-work drinks and alcohol-led events have been a central part of workplace culture. However, the latest data suggests that these traditions are being reconsidered by Gen Z, who are bringing different expectations around inclusivity, wellbeing and social connection.
The preference for alcohol-free events may reflect broader lifestyle changes among younger generations, including reduced alcohol consumption and a stronger focus on health and balance.
Rethinking inclusion at work
The findings raise important questions for employers about how inclusive their social offerings really are.
Workplace socials are often positioned as a way to build relationships and strengthen team culture, but for some employees, alcohol-centered events can feel exclusionary or uncomfortable. As expectations evolve, businesses may need to rethink how they create opportunities for connection that appeal to a wider range of preferences.
Rebecca Waller, Interior Designer at Diamond Interiors said:
“What we are seeing is a clear shift in how younger employees want to engage with workplace culture. Social connection is still important, but it is not necessarily tied to alcohol in the same way it has been in the past.
“When half of Gen Z say they would prefer work events without alcohol, it suggests employers need to think more carefully about how inclusive their social environments really are.
“Creating spaces that support different types of interaction is key. Whether that is through more flexible breakout areas, collaborative zones or quieter spaces, the workplace itself can play a role in shaping how people connect without relying on traditional formats like after-work drinks.
“Businesses that recognize this shift and adapt will be better placed to build cultures that resonate with a wider range of employees.”
