Workers Waiting Until Burnout Before Booking Annual Leave, Workplace Expert Warns

Millions of employees are entering one of the busiest periods of the working year after returning from summer holidays, but workplace experts say many are waiting too long before taking another break.

While annual leave is often viewed as something to save for a major holiday, experts believe spreading time off throughout the year can play an important role in maintaining productivity, focus and overall wellbeing.

Rebecca Waller, Head Of Design at Diamond Interiors, says many employees ignore the early warning signs of burnout, only booking time off once stress has already started to affect their work and personal lives.

"Many people see annual leave as a reward for getting through a busy period, rather than something that helps prevent them from reaching that point in the first place.

"By the time you're struggling to concentrate, feeling constantly exhausted or becoming irritable with colleagues, you're often already experiencing the effects of prolonged workplace stress.

"Taking regular breaks throughout the year allows people to reset mentally before burnout begins to impact both their wellbeing and their performance."

According to Rebecca, there are several warning signs that suggest employees may be overdue a break from work.

These include:

  • Struggling to concentrate on tasks that would normally feel straightforward

  • Feeling mentally drained despite getting enough sleep

  • Becoming more impatient or irritable with colleagues

  • Losing motivation and enthusiasm for work

  • Making more mistakes than usual

  • Feeling overwhelmed by everyday workloads

  • Finding it difficult to switch off outside working hours

Rebecca says employers also have an important role to play in encouraging staff to take the annual leave they are entitled to.

She added:

"Creating a healthy workplace goes beyond good office design. It also means fostering a culture where employees feel comfortable taking time off without worrying they'll return to an overwhelming workload or feel guilty for stepping away.

"People perform at their best when they've had the opportunity to properly recharge. Regular breaks don't just benefit employees – they also help businesses by supporting productivity, creativity and long-term engagement."

As many employees settle back into work following their summer holidays, Rebecca encourages workers to plan their remaining annual leave rather than saving it until the end of the year.

"Annual leave shouldn't only be used once you're already exhausted," she said. "Taking smaller breaks throughout the year can make a real difference to both your wellbeing and your ability to do your best work."
