Abstract: Workers aged 55 and older now make up nearly a quarter of the U.S. workforce, yet they are frequently left out of the AI capability-building reshaping organizations. This article synthesizes recent AARP survey data, early labor market evidence on generative AI, peer-reviewed research on age stereotypes, age-diversity climate, job design, and older adults' learning, and documented organizational cases. It finds that older workers are increasingly familiar with AI and interested in learning to use it, but that a large gap separates interest from training received, that age stereotypes about technology persist, and that AI-enabled hiring tools have created new legal exposure for age discrimination. Early evidence suggests that AI's employment effects have so far fallen most heavily on young entry-level workers rather than experienced ones. The article proposes five evidence-based responses: age-inclusive AI training design, bias-proofed hiring and AI tools, career conversations at every age, mutual mentoring in multigenerational teams, and flexible, phased work with structured knowledge transfer. It concludes with three long-term capabilities for sustaining an age-inclusive AI workforce.
