Why More Workers Are Switching to Standing Desks, According to Experts

Standing desks have become an increasingly common feature in modern workplaces, with more businesses looking for ways to improve employee comfort and create healthier working environments.

While traditional desks remain the most popular choice, workplace experts say growing awareness around movement, flexibility and workplace wellbeing is driving increased interest in sit-stand workstations.

Unlike conventional desks, standing desks allow employees to alternate between sitting and standing throughout the day, giving workers greater control over how they use their workspace.

Rebecca Waller, Head Of Design at DBI Furniture Solutions said:

"Many employees spend a significant portion of their day sitting at a desk, particularly in office-based roles. As a result, we're seeing more organisztions explore furniture solutions that encourage greater movement and flexibility throughout the working day.

"Standing desks have become increasingly popular because they allow employees to change position more regularly rather than remaining seated for long periods."

Rebecca explained that one of the biggest benefits of standing desks is the ability to adapt the workspace to different tasks and personal preferences.

She said:

"Different people work in different ways. Some employees prefer to sit when carrying out focused tasks, while others find standing helpful during video calls, collaborative work or when they simply want a change of posture.

"The appeal of a height-adjustable desk is that it gives employees the option to choose what works best for them throughout the day."

The growing popularity of standing desks also reflects wider changes in workplace design, with businesses placing greater emphasis on employee wellbeing and creating environments that support different ways of working.

Rebecca said:

"Modern workplaces are increasingly being designed around flexibility. Rather than providing a one-size-fits-all solution, employers are looking at how they can create spaces that support productivity, comfort and wellbeing.

"Furniture plays a significant role in that. Employees are becoming more aware of how their workspace affects their day-to-day experience, and businesses are responding by investing in solutions that offer greater adaptability."

However, experts stress that standing desks are not intended to replace sitting entirely.

"The goal isn't to stand all day. The real benefit comes from being able to move between sitting and standing throughout the day rather than remaining in one position for extended periods.

"Alongside regular breaks, movement and a well-designed workstation, standing desks can form part of a more flexible and comfortable working environment."

As employers continue to rethink workplace design in the era of hybrid working, standing desks are expected to remain a popular option for organizations looking to create more adaptable office spaces.
