Air traffic controllers don’t require a degree, make six figures, and are virtually impossible to automate, a June 2026 report finds. With millions of workers questioning how stable their careers are in the AI era, a new study by GoHumanize, an AI humanizer tool, reveals the top 10 future-proof professions that are easy to enter and pay well.
Air traffic controllers earn $144K+ a year, more than most college graduates, and only 25% of their work is exposed to automation.
Healthcare roles like radiation therapists and dental hygienists pay over $94K and are projected to keep growing through 2034, driven by an aging population.
Distribution managers score 77/100 on AI resistance, and their job requires just a high school diploma to get started.
The study analyzed occupations that don't require a four-year degree but still pay well and hold up against automation. Every job had to pass four criteria: entry accessible via high school diploma, certificate, or apprenticeship; a median annual wage of at least $50K; an AI-resistance index of 70 or higher, meaning no more than 30% of tasks are exposed to automation; and projected employment growth of at least 7% through 2034. The jobs were ranked based on their median salaries.
Here's a look at the top 10 highest-paying entry-level jobs in AI-resistant fields:
Profession | Category | AI-Resistant Index | Typical Entry-Level Education | Work Experience Required | Employment Growth % (24–34) | Overall Median Wage |
Air Traffic Controllers | Aviation | 75.0 | Associate's degree | None | 1% | $144,580 |
Commercial Pilots | Aviation | 65.9 | Postsecondary nondegree award | None | 5% | $122,670 |
Elevator And Escalator Installers And Repairers | Construction | 54.5 | High school diploma or equivalent | None | 5% | $106,580 |
First-Line Supervisors of Police And Detectives | Emergency Services | 87.5 | High school diploma or equivalent | None | 3% | $105,980 |
Transportation, Storage, And Distribution Managers | Management | 77.2 | High school diploma or equivalent | None | 6% | $102,010 |
Radiation Therapists | Healthcare | 76.4 | Associate's degree | None | 2% | $101,990 |
Ship Engineers | Construction | 72.1 | Postsecondary nondegree award | None | 2% | $101,320 |
Electrical And Electronics Repairers, Powerhouse, Substation, And Relay | Construction | 65.9 | Postsecondary nondegree award | None | 6% | $100,940 |

1. Air Traffic Controllers
AI-Resistant Index: 75/100
Entry-Level Education: Associate's degree
Employment Growth (2024–2034): 1%
Median Annual Wage: $144.5K
Air traffic controllers are the best-paid workers who don't need a bachelor's degree. They make $144K+ a year on average, more than double what most college graduates earn in their first jobs. Starting this job requires just an associate's degree as well, although the training process can be extensive. Air traffic controllers are also safe from automation, as AI can handle only about a quarter of their work, and the rest requires real-time decision-making by a human.
2. Commercial Pilots
Commercial pilots earn $122K+ a year and can enter the field with a postsecondary certificate rather than a college degree. That makes aviation the second-highest-paying path for workers without a four-year credential. While some cockpit functions are already automated, the job is still future-proof, scoring 66/100 points in AI-resistance. Employment is on an upward track as well, with the industry projected to add thousands of pilot positions by 2034.
3. Elevator and Escalator Installers and Repairers
Elevator and escalator installers are high-earning skilled trades that can pay more than many desk jobs. Their salaries average $106K+, reachable through a high school diploma followed by an apprenticeship, with no college required. Beyond that, only about 45% of their tasks are expected to be automated, and around 1,200 more positions will be added to this field over the next decade.
4. First-Line Supervisors of Police and Detectives
Supervisors of police and detective units are virtually impossible to automate. Their work is heavily interpersonal, which is why it scores 87.5/100 in the AI-resistance index. In addition to being future-proof, these supervisors are also quite well-paid, making nearly $106K a year. Plus, their roles are in high demand, as it is projected that about 4,600 additional jobs will open in this category through 2034.
5. Transportation, Storage, and Distribution Managers
Transportation and distribution manager jobs pay $102K a year and are accessible with a high school diploma. Most workers do arrive with years of experience in logistics before stepping into the role, though. That said, it might still be worth it as the profession promises job security. For example, it scores 77/100 points in the AI-resistance, and employment is also projected to grow 6% in the coming years.
The Founder of GoHumanize commented on the study:
"The assumption that AI is only a threat to low-wage or repetitive work is wrong. We're seeing how AI moves into the legal and finance sectors now, where the jobs used to feel secure. Young people are told to go to university, but in reality, it’s trades that promise a more stable income now. The jobs that require hands-on work and human judgment, or the roles that have direct responsibility for other people’s safety. While no one can predict the job market with certainty, those skills surely seem to be hardest to replicate with software."
