AI Adoption Is Creating Hidden Productivity and Risk Costs

Feb 7
2 min read

AI adoption increases output speed, but it also increases review, correction, and operational exposure.

Most organizations measure AI success by throughput. Fewer measure the human effort required to validate AI-generated outputs before they can be used safely. Generative systems can produce confident responses that look complete even when they are incomplete or wrong, shifting responsibility onto the people downstream.

This cost is starting to surface in research. Reporting on MIT work indicates that reliance on AI tools during writing tasks can reduce brain engagement and performance, reinforcing the need for human judgement rather than replacing it.

At an organizational level, the same pattern appears. Harvard Business School research on generative AI and work processes highlights how AI changes task execution and work allocation, which can introduce additional coordination and review requirements depending on how teams structure responsibility and oversight.

The risk compounds as AI use spreads across functions. Errors that would once have been contained can now propagate across documents, communications, and workflows before they are detected.

This is not a tooling issue. It is an operating model issue. Without clear boundaries, review processes, and accountability, AI shifts work rather than removing it, while increasing legal, reputational, and operational exposure.

The productivity promise of AI holds only when organizations define where AI can be trusted, where it cannot, and when human intervention is mandatory.
