Abstract: Recent survey data reveals a crisis of confidence in organizational leadership, with four in five workers reporting they rarely or never trust leaders to prioritize employee interests over profit. This article synthesizes empirical research on workplace trust with LiveCareer's 2026 Trust Under Pressure report to examine how organizational trust deteriorates during periods of financial uncertainty, workforce restructuring, and technological transformation. Drawing on organizational justice theory, psychological contract research, and contemporary evidence from AI implementation contexts, this analysis identifies key mechanisms through which trust erodes and presents evidence-based interventions that preserve organizational relationships during turbulent periods. The findings suggest that transparent communication, procedural fairness, and demonstrated commitment to employee capability building represent critical levers for maintaining trust when organizations face difficult decisions. Practical frameworks for rebuilding organizational trustworthiness across leadership practice, communication systems, and human capital investment are presented alongside case examples from multiple industries.
