New Study Debunks the "January Job Search Myth": June Is the Best Month to Apply, While January and February Pair the Most Competition With Below-Average Hiring
Analysis of U.S. government labor statistics, 1.8 million resumes, and 500 recruiter responses shows job seekers and employers are running on two separate calendars.

Every January, a wave of job seekers starts searching, encouraged by career advice that calls the new year the best time to find a job. But a new study from career platform Enhancv finds that January and February give job seekers the least favorable mix of the year: the most competition from other candidates, paired with below-average hiring.
By analyzing U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (JOLTS) data from 2021 to 2025, validated against 25 years of history, alongside 1.8 million U.S. resumes and a survey of 500 recruiters and hiring managers, Enhancv found that job seekers and employers operate on two separate calendars. Job-seeker activity peaks early in the year, while hiring builds through the spring and peaks in the summer.
Key Study Findings
The Early-Year Crowd
Enhancv resume downloads run 11.6% above average in January and 13.9% above average in February, while U.S. hiring runs 3.4% and 15.3% below average in those months. January, February, and March favored employers in all five years analyzed.
June Offers the Best Odds
Hiring runs 16.3% above average in June, the highest of any month, while resume activity drops 8% below average, a 26% advantage for job seekers.
Four Reliable Months
June, July, August, and October favored job seekers in every year from 2021 to 2025, with no exceptions.
The Hiring Lag
Job postings peak in April, July, and October, and hires follow one to two months later, staying strongest from May through August. 36% of surveyed recruiters say two to four weeks typically pass between posting a job and a candidate accepting an offer.
Budgets Set the Pace
Recruiters most often cite budget approvals and fiscal-year timing (38%) and too few qualified applicants (37.2%) as what slows hiring at certain times of year, which helps explain why hiring builds through spring rather than peaking in January.
A Misleading Baseline
January resume activity is only 11.6% above an average month, but measured against December, it looks like a 51% surge, one reason the "apply in January" advice keeps circulating.
December Hits Rock Bottom
Hiring falls 26.5% below average in December, the lowest point of the year, making the holidays better suited to preparing a resume than to applying.
"For years, job seekers have been told January is their month, and the data says otherwise," said Volen Vulkov, co-founder of Enhancv. "January and February are when competition is highest and hiring is below average. Starting your search early isn’t a mistake, but it’s the time to prepare. The best odds come from late spring onward."
Recruiters see the same gap between the advice and reality. "The mistake, I would say, is treating this general trend like it's a rule," said Jon Hill, Chairman & CEO at The Energists.
Methodology: The study uses monthly Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS) data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (Job Openings and Hires, Total Nonfarm, not seasonally adjusted) for 2021–2025, with every pattern also checked against the full series back to 2001. 2020 was excluded due to pandemic distortion. Each month was compared to a centered 12-month moving average to isolate the seasonal pattern. Enhancv’s internal data covers 1.8 million U.S. resumes and 662,214 downloads from 2021 to 2025 and measures job-seeker behavior, not hiring outcomes. The survey of 500 U.S. recruiters and hiring managers was fielded via Pollfish and serves as directional corroboration.
