About the Journal:

Higher Education Leadership: The Journal of Academic Innovation, Faculty Development, and Institutional Change is a multidisciplinary academic publication dedicated to advancing evidence-based approaches to leading colleges and universities through a period of profound change. Our mission is to bridge scholarship across higher education administration, organizational studies, faculty development, and educational policy to understand how academic leaders build institutions that are innovative, resilient, and mission-driven.

Higher Education Leadership publishes rigorously peer-reviewed articles, empirical studies, and theoretical frameworks that showcase:

  • Original research examining academic leadership at every level—from department chairs and deans to provosts, presidents, and governing boards—and its influence on institutional performance and student success

  • Empirical and theoretical investigations into faculty development, faculty well-being, and the policies, structures, and cultures that support teaching excellence, scholarly productivity, and professional growth

  • Cross-disciplinary scholarship exploring academic innovation, including new program models, curricular redesign, technology and AI adoption, and alternative pathways to credentials

  • Evidence-based frameworks for strategic planning, shared governance, change management, and institutional transformation amid enrollment shifts, financial pressures, and evolving public expectations

We prioritize work that pairs scholarly rigor with practical relevance for those who lead and serve within academic institutions. Our aim is to provide a publishing space that advances both theoretical understanding and actionable insights for navigating institutional change—across community colleges, regional and comprehensive universities, research institutions, and online and international higher education.

Through collaborative, cross-institutional inquiry, Higher Education Leadership amplifies scholarship that transforms how colleges and universities are led, how faculty grow and thrive, and how institutions adapt to serve their students and communities. We welcome submissions from researchers, administrators, faculty, faculty developers, student affairs professionals, and policymakers across higher education, organizational leadership, educational policy, and related fields.

Higher Education Leadership aims to advance the practice of academic leadership through the global exchange of empirically grounded, theoretically robust knowledge. Quantitative and qualitative research, mixed-methods studies, systematic reviews, case studies, institutional assessments, practitioner-oriented frameworks, and conceptual articles exploring academic leadership, faculty development, and institutional change are welcomed.

The journal provides a forum for the rapid dissemination of rigorously peer-reviewed research, case studies, evaluations, and commentary on contemporary issues relating to shared governance, leadership development, faculty careers, academic innovation, institutional sustainability, and the evolving purpose of higher education in society.

By connecting leadership scholarship with the realities of institutional life, Higher Education Leadership amplifies scholarship and strategies that strengthen colleges and universities as places where students, faculty, and communities flourish.
