Engaging and Retaining Young Talent

Jonathan and Elan discussed the challenges of engaging and retaining young talent in the workforce, particularly in the context of the pandemic and the diverse generations present in the workforce. Elan emphasized the importance of soft skills for success and well-being, and Jonathan highlighted the need for organizations to adapt to the changing landscape and cater to the unique experiences and backgrounds of younger workers. The conversation set the stage for exploring practical tips and strategies for retaining and nurturing younger talent.

Gen Z and Millennial Generations in the Workplace

Elan and Jonathan discussed the needs and values of the Gen Z and millennial generations in the workplace. Elan highlighted that feeling valued and appreciated is a common denominator across all generations, but the way this is achieved may differ. He noted that for Gen Z, flexibility is key, and pay is a top priority due to the economic impact of the great recession on their families. Elan also pointed out that affordability and the option for hybrid work are important to this generation, allowing them to live in more affordable locations. He ended the discussion by pointing out the political and social instability that Gen Z has grown up experiencing in the United States, which has instilled in them a sense of rebellion against existing structures.

Retaining Young Talent: Challenges and Solutions

Elan and Jonathan discussed the challenges of retaining and engaging young talent in the workforce. Elan emphasized the importance of providing financial security and learning opportunities, while Jonathan highlighted the general distrust of institutions among younger generations and the changing notion of the American dream. They also discussed the changing shelf life of skills and how young people's values are evolving, leading to a shift in what they prioritize in life and in the workforce.

Generational Labels and Workplace Expectations

Jonathan expressed his disagreement with the notion of young, entitled Millennial or Gen. Z students or workers. He argued that every generation has entitled individuals and that the label was unfairly applied to the younger generation. He suggested that their priorities and values have shifted, leading them to prioritize a better work experience. Jonathan also pointed out that the psychological contract of the workplace has shifted, with younger people less willing to stay in the same job or company for a long time. Elan agreed with Jonathan's points, acknowledging the nuances in the younger generation's mindset.

Technology's Impact on Dating and Communication

Elan and Jonathan discussed the evolution of dating and the impact of technology on people's tolerance for discomfort. Elan highlighted how technology has made it easier for people to avoid uncomfortable conversations and situations, which he argued is limiting opportunities for growth and exposure to diverse perspectives. They also touched on the need for civil dialogue and how it has become increasingly challenging in today's society. Towards the end, Jonathan invited his audience to connect with Elan and find out more about his work and courses through Divon Academy.
